On February 12 2025, the No Money For Terror conference was held in Munich, perfectly organized and hosted by the German Ministry of Finance.

Alongside the national delegations, many international organizations that play a role in the fight against money laundering, terrorist financing and predicate offences participated in the conference, amongst them the Egmont Group of financial intelligence units, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the UNODC and the United Nations, which are all very important to the work of FIUs.

The FIU-the Netherlands appreciates the words of the FATF president, Ms. Elisa de Anda Madrazo, underlining the necessity of making good use of financial intelligence, as well as the words of the Executive Secretary of the Egmont Group, Mr. Jérôme Beaumont, explaining the important role FIU’s play in providing this financial intelligence.

The strengthening of financial intelligence occurs not only through collaboration, but also requires the appropriate technology. This was confirmed by both the executive director of UNODC, Ms. Ghada Waly and the Director of UNCCT Mr. Mauro Miedico. They expressed the importance of providing FIU’s with the IT solutions they need to perform their job.

This aligns with ongoing efforts to leverage technology that supports FIU’s in their work. An important example of such technological developments is GoAML, a proven technology already used by more than 70 FIUs, that will continue to be innovated. FIU-the Netherlands will continue to support this development. Recently the Head of the FIU-the Netherlands has visited both Ms. Ghada Waly (December 2024) and Mr. Vladimir Voronkov, Under Secretary General of UNOCT (January 2025), to discuss these IT developments.

Additionally, UN New York, OCT, supported by UNOICT, is currently developing the application GoFintel in collaboration with the FIU-the Netherlands. This application will provide, amongst other potential authorities, FIU’s with additional advanced analytical powers. It will work seamlessly with GoAML. The developers have agreed to join forces to assist member states in their fight against terrorism financing. Additionally, they aim to combat predicate offences and money laundering offences, which are strongly connected and can no longer be seen separately.

The FIU-the Netherlands wishes to compliment UN and UNODC for their unwavering support to member states and expresses its readiness to cooperate in the further developments.

The Head of the FIU-the Netherlands thanks both Ms. Gada Waly and Mr. Vladimir Voronkov for the very productive and pleasant discussions over the past few months.
